What Is Happening
Today, April 4, Anthropic begins restricting how Claude subscription tokens can be used. Users on paid plans — Pro, Max, Team — will find that third-party AI coding harnesses like OpenClaw can no longer draw from their subscription's monthly token allocation.
The change was communicated via email to affected users Friday evening. Those who want to continue using OpenClaw with their Claude account will need to purchase additional "extra usage" at pay-as-you-go rates, billed separately from their subscription.
The Timeline
This enforcement has been in motion for months:
- January 9, 2026: Anthropic quietly blocked OAuth tokens from working in third-party tools
- February 18, 2026: Clarified that Claude accounts could still be used with third-party tools, but subscription limits would not apply
- April 4, 2026: Full enforcement begins — subscription limits no longer cover third-party harness usage
What Anthropic Is Offering
To soften the transition, Anthropic is providing:
- A one-time credit equal to the subscriber's monthly plan price
- Discounted usage bundles — up to 30% off when pre-purchased

The Community Response
The policy has divided opinion. On Hacker News, comments range from understanding Anthropic's infrastructure concerns to accusations of anti-competitive behavior.
One recurring argument: subscriptions are priced for human usage patterns — interactive, bursty sessions — while automated agents run continuously at rates subscriptions never accounted for. Others counter that Claude Code itself enables similar automation, making the distinction arbitrary.
A notable voice: OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger, now at OpenAI, said he and board member Dave Morin attempted to negotiate with Anthropic. Their outcome was a one-week delay rather than a policy reversal.
