Cursor's New Coding Model Was Secretly Built on Kimi K2.5 (And It Matters)
Date: March 22, 2026 | Source: TechCrunch
Cursor launched Composer 2 as "frontier-level coding intelligence" — without mentioning it was built on top of Moonshot AI's open-source Kimi K2.5. A community member spotted the model ID in Cursor's code and called it out publicly.
What happened
- Cursor VP confirmed: "Composer 2 started from an open-source base"
- ~75% of compute came from Cursor's own training on top of Kimi
- Used via authorized commercial partnership through Fireworks AI
- Kimi's official account congratulated Cursor and confirmed the licensing
Why it matters
Kimi K2.5 (released Jan 27, 2026) is Moonshot AI's multimodal open-source model — backed by Alibaba and HongShan. It features the MoonViT vision encoder and strong coding capability. Cursor is a $29.3B valuation company with $2B+ ARR — and they're building on Chinese open-source foundations.
This is a landmark moment: leading Western AI products are now openly (if reluctantly) depending on Chinese open-source models. The OSS AI ecosystem is genuinely global.
