OpenAI Launches Pay-As-You-Go Codex Seats — 6× Enterprise Growth Since January

OpenAI has quietly removed one of the biggest friction points for enterprise Codex adoption: the fixed seat fee. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise teams can now add Codex-only seats on a pure pay-as-you-go, token-based billing model — no upfront commitment, no rate limits, just usage tracked to the token. Alongside the change, OpenAI cut the standard annual ChatGPT Business seat price from $25 to $20 per seat per month, and is sweetening the deal with $100 in Codex credits per new user added (up to $500 per team, limited time).

The announcement also surfaced compelling adoption numbers: two million builders now use Codex weekly, and Codex users within ChatGPT Business and Enterprise have grown six times over since January. Design partners mentioned include Notion, Ramp, Braintrust, and Wasmer. OpenAI is pointing teams toward the Codex macOS and Windows app as the starting point, with Plugins and Automations integrations rounding out the enterprise story. Removing the seat-fee barrier makes it practical for a single engineer to start a pilot without finance approval — the classic land-and-expand motion — while token-based billing gives platform teams clean per-workflow cost attribution from day one.
