Runway Launches $10M Fund + 'Builders' Program for AI Video Startups
Runway is no longer just building AI video models — it's building the ecosystem around them. The company announced a $10 million venture fund alongside a free API-credits program called Builders, targeting startups from seed through Series C that want to build on top of Runway's video intelligence infrastructure. The dual launch signals a deliberate shift from being a creative tool to becoming a platform other companies depend on.
The fund's investment thesis spans three buckets: frontier AI and architecture research, application layer builders, and companies exploring new media and storytelling formats. Runway has already been quietly backing companies like LanceDB and Tamarind Bio — the latter doing AI-driven protein drug design, well outside the creative tooling category. That breadth reflects Runway's conviction that "video intelligence" opens industries it can't pursue alone, from pharmaceutical simulation to real-time audio applications.
The timing follows Runway's December 2025 launch of "general world models," which marked the company's public pivot from creative video generation toward simulation and environment modeling. The Builders program in particular is a strategic move to lock promising startups into Runway's API stack early, establishing distribution advantages before competitors can offer comparable access. For AI founders evaluating infrastructure partnerships, Runway just made its long-term ambitions explicit.
